How to Measure for Window Shutters

When you measure your windows for custom interior shutters, it’s important that you be as precise as possible. There are several steps you must take to make sure your custom shutters fit your windows. Luckily, Advanced Blinds & Awnings has a checklist you can follow to help you properly measure for window shutters.

The Tools You Need to Measure for Indoor Window Shutters

We recommend that you use a steel measuring tape to measure your windows for custom plantation shutters. A steel measuring tape is strong enough to stay stable while you’re taking measurements. It’s also accurate to the 1/16th inch. However, we want you to measure to the nearest 1/8th. If you wind up with a 1/16th inch measurement, round down to the nearest 1/8th inch.

Tips to Measure Accurately for Window Shutters

There are a few tips we suggest you follow when you measure for your custom wood shutters:

  • Make sure your window is square. To do this, measure the diagonal lengths of your window. If the numbers are within ¼ to ½ inch of each other, your windows are square. If they’re not, we recommend outside mount window shutters.
  • Keep track of which measurements are the width and which are the height. The standard convention is width x height. If your window is 36 inches wide and 52 inches tall, you would note that the window is 36 x 52.
  • Measure the depth of your window before you decide you want inside mount custom shutters. If it’s not deep enough, you’ll have to install outside mount custom interior shutters.

Measure for Inside Mount Window Shutters

Inside mount custom shutters are mounted inside your window’s frame. They provide a sleek, minimalist appearance.

To measure your window for inside mount window shutters, start by measuring the width of the window at the top, middle, and bottom. Make note of the smallest number—that’s the measurement you’re going to use for your custom shutters.

Next, measure the height of the window on the left, in the center, and on the right. Again, note down the smallest number. Then double check that you’ve listed your measurements as width x height. That’s the size of interior window shutters you need to order.

Measure for Outside Mount Window Shutters

Outside mount custom shutters are hung outside the window frame. They make your ceilings seem higher and windows look larger. They also block more light and don’t need your window measurements to be as precise.

To measure your windows for outside mount indoor window shutters, start again by making sure your windows are square. Then check the depth of your window to make sure the louvers of your custom plantation shutters will fit.

Then measure your window the same way as you did for your inside mount window shutters. This time, measure all the way out to your window trim, if your trim is more than 1 ½ inches wide. If it’s not, just measure the window like you would for inside mount custom shutters. Instead of noting the smallest number, use the largest number as your measurement.
